As the flame burns from the top of the candle, the tube acts as a vacuum and debris is drawn up into the lower part of the
candle. The lighted candle warms and smoke begins to spiral down inside the hollow wax/muslin tube, bringing warmth to the
area of the ear. This warmth begins the softening of hardened earwax and the vortex-like smoke dislodges wax, fungus, parasites
and other debris. (Many of us have a memory of when our grandfather rolled up a newspaper and blew cigar smoke into our ear
to ease the congestion and pressure from an earache!)
